Victorian Amboyna and Ebonized Parlor Cabinet

  • Condition: Generally in excellent condition, with tight construction and a finish which is probably original and also in excellent condition. As evidenced in the catalogue/online photograph, there is some significant loss to the silvering of the mirror backs. The upper left mirror surround is cracked in two places and missing the tip of a volute. The shelves below that are missing some veneer trim at the junction of the shelf with the mirror frame. There are a few odd losses to the beading, and some beading is replaced at the lower edges surrounding the porcelain plaques. The original beading is brass--the replacement appears to be carefully carved wood. The plaques on either side of the drawer are perplexing. They consist of a beaded surround over glass covering a gold leaf decorated panel. The gold leaf is clearly old and unadorned. We are uncertain whether it is an old replacement or a period design technique.
