Victorian Four-Piece Coffee and Tea Set, London 1850-1852, by James Charles Edington (1803-1873; free 1824), including a coffeepot, h. 10-1/2", l. 9", a teapot, h. 8", l. 9-7/8", an open sugar bowl, h. 6-3/4", w. 6-1/2", and a cream jug, h. 6-5/8", l. 4-3/8", each with a bulbous body and tall waisted collar above four cabochon-crested acanthus scroll feet, decorated with repousse flowers and scrolls on an imbricate ground all centering a cartouche of a village scene with applied bas-relief figures, opposing a cartouche with an engraved crest of a unicorn's head erased, with peaked double-scroll handles, 93.76 total t. oz.

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. In generally good condition with scattered scuffs, dings and wear consistent with age, the most notable as follows. The coffeepot and the cream jug both have short dents on the "cabochon" on the body, the longest 1/4". The coffeepot has a 1/4" dent at the center front of the spout, and the teapot has a similar 1/2" dent in the same spot, with a 1/4" crack alongside. The teapot handle has some give owing to shrinkage of the insulators; the coffeepot has replacement insulators that are firm. Good heft and extravagant decoration. Each piece marked (on the body, near the rim or on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "Q" for 1851-1852 (the cream jug with "P" for 1850-1851); 4) the Victoria's bust duty mark; and 5) the "J.C.E" maker's mark of James Charles Eddington. The pot handles and lids part-marked. Marks good, some with light wear but all fully legible.
