Victorian Silverplate Centerpiece and Plateau, fourth quarter 19th century, the centerpiece by James Deakin & Sons, Sheffield, the triangular base crested by three hippocampi surrounding a paneled standard surmounted by a glass fruit stand and trumpet vase, both engraved with grapevines, h. 22-1/2", dia. 9", the unmarked plateau circular with openwork acanthus scroll feet and fitted with a beveled mirrored plate, dia. 14-1/2".

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Centerpiece: In generally good condition, with the expected signs of surface wear, but no dents breaks or repairs noted to the metal. Anomalous rings on the foreheads of the hippocampi suggest additional ornamentation, now lacking. The underside marked with the James Deakin trademarks. Glass elements in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks noted; probably later replacements. Plateau: Some bleeding to the yellow metal core, particularly on the edges above the feet. Three of the underside retaining pins lacking. No dents or breaks. Scattered scratches to the mirrored plate, the longest about 1-1/2", and a roughly 2-1/2" oval outlined area of opaque discoloration to the silvering at one edge.
