Victorian Silverplate Centerpiece

third quarter 19th century, by James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield, in the form of four palm trees on a lush rocky mound, the central tree surmounted by a palm leaf vase, the three surrounding trees with palm fronds scrolling to end in three glass baskets and pendant date clusters, the base with a lozenge-shaped cartouche engraved with a crest: "upon a log, an eagle or rising, charged on the breast and each with a fleur-de-lis".
h. 26", w. 19-1/2", base w. 14"

Provenance: Bruce McCashin Collection.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition, with no losses to the silvering, dents, breaks or repairs. The four "trees" are secured by threaded stems and nuts on the underside, which are all original; one is a little loose but fully secure. The glass bowls (which can be inverted for decorative purposes) are in reasonably good shape, though one has four shallow chips on the peaks (the largest about 1/4"), and one other bowl has a single small chip. No cracks or repairs on the glass; it may or may not have had a large bowl on top, now lacking. Excellent engraving on the crest. Marked (on the underside) with the "JD & S" trademark of James Dixon & Sons, and "395". A very attractive piece.
