Victorian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case

hallmarked Birmingham, 1891-1892, by Colen Hewer Cheshire (1843-1911), of rounded rectangular form, with lift-top and drop-front, the interior gilt with short pierced and engraved scrolled grille, the front engraved with the crest of Gill of Bickham Park, Devonshire.

  • Condition: **Surface scuffs and hairline scratches from age and use, but none deep. There is a 3/8" diameter dent on the upper right corner, but no others. The catch is well-worn and barely engages. Interior gilding bright and clean. Hallmarked (on the inside rear half) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the Birmingham anchor; 3) the date letter "r" for 1891-1892; and 4) the "C.C." maker's mark of C. H. Cheshire; the interior lid and front half part-marked. Marks very good.
