Viennese Silver Gilt, Enamel and Painted Miniature Tobacco Box

fourth quarter 19th century, the maker's mark rubbed, second standard (.900) silver, the square box with black and white champleve enamel panels featuring allegorical symbols of the seasons flanked by comical tobacco harvesters, the corners with figures of satyrs on monopodal paw feet, the hinged lid with a glazed miniature of "Der Rauchgesellschaft" ["The Smoking Club"] after David Teniers the younger (1610-1690), glazed, the interior ornately engraved.

  • Condition: **Dark oxidation and wear to the gilding throughout. Some small chips and cracks to the opaque cream-colored enamel, but no revealed ground on the sides noted, but a few tiny exposed areas on the lid enameling. Nice engraving on the interior and underside. Marked on the underside with the "Dianakopf" and a worn maker's mark (JW conjoined?).
    Miniature with small cracks at upper right - longest approx. 1/2" - and accompanying small loss to corner. Possible moisture damage to paint surface, especially evident in center and at mid to lower right edge. Some scattered areas of soiling. Not examined out of framework.
