Vintage Mixed Metal "Eighteen Pounder" Cocktail Shaker

first quarter 20th century, Gorham Corp., Providence, Rhode Island, with brass "combination fuze" cap, chromed "shell" body and copper band, inscribed "Dr. and Mrs. Currie / from / Col. and Mrs. Toffey Jr.".
h. 11-7/8", dia. 3-1/4"

Notes: This popular model of cocktail shaker is an exact replica of a WWI-era "eighteen pounder" shrapnel shell. One of the largest shakers produced during the Jazz Age, the original included a copper "casing" base, lacking in this lot, which housed a rack of cordial glasses. See Simon Khachadourian The Cocktail Shaker: The Tanqueray Guide (London: Philip Wilson Publishers, 2000), p. 22 for an illustration of the full model.

  • Condition: **In quite good condition, with nice bright finish and no dents, breaks or repairs noted. Minor surface wear. Not tested for water fastness but no holes noted, and shaker cap and pouring cap both nice and tight. No breaks to the grille. Stamped (on the underside) "Fac-Simile / Eighteen Pounder / Shrapnel Shell" and "Patent Applied For / In America and Foreign Countries".
