  • Provenance: Private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana, thence by descent.

At the close of the Civil War, William Henry Buck emigrated from Norway to the United States. Initially, Buck settled on the east coast, including living and traveling to Boston, New York City, Canada, and Maine. While in Boston, he studied fine art with Ernest Ciceri, a talented landscape painter. By 1870, Buck had moved to New Orleans where he found a position in a cotton commission merchant office and studied painting with Richard Clague, who worked in the French Barbizon landscape tradition. Buck established himself in the local arts community, and was founding member of the Southern Art Union while exhibiting his paintings at W.E. Seebold's gallery.

From Clague, Buck learned to appreciate painting outdoors en plein air, where he developed an understanding of the naturalistic vistas of bayou country. In the painting Fishing Village on Bayou Teche, Buck depicted two boat builders working on a two-masted schooner pulled out of the water for repairs, cleaning, and maintenance. Set within the pristine bayou, Buck included buildings, a dock and a church emerging from the Live Oak trees further down the shore.
