Notes: The Rev. Lawrence Panting was born on October 26, 1808 in Belmont, Shrewsbury, the son of Thomas Panting and Mary Mieres. He studied at St. John's Cambridge and was ordained a deacon in 1832 and a priest on November 10, 1833. He served as Curate of Malpas, Cheshire and Hodnet, Shropshire from 1832 until 1838; it was evidently the end of his curacy in Hodnet that was the occasion of this handsome gift from his parishioners. He was next made Vicar of Chebsey, Staffordshire, which position he held until his death on October 20, 1895.

  • Condition: **In generally good condition, with no issues noted beyond the expected surface patina and scuffs commensurate with age and use. One of the seven retaining bolts on the underside is lacking. The extinguisher is a replacement as noted, and its hook is loose but attached. Nice detail and engraving. One well has a silver collar, the glass body has been cracked completely in half, securely repaired with epoxy but not functional given a small loss on the underside. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "r" for 1832-1833; 4) the William IV bust duty mark; and 5) the "P.S" maker's mark of Paul Storr; additionally inscribed "253" and "Storr & Mortimer". Marks good. The taperstand fully and identically hallmarked on the sleeve; the bobeche, receptacle frames, well caps and collar all part-marked (with the same date letter and maker's mark when appearing). The extinguisher marked Birmingham, 1837-1838, by Robinson, Edkins & Aston.
