William IV Sterling Silver Gilt Inkwell, hallmarked London, 1836-1837, by Benjamin Smith III, of baluster form, decorated with repousse rococo scrolls and chased rocaille banding, with figural crest finial of an eagle displayed out of a ducal coronet, h. 6", dia. 3-1/2", 9.89 t. oz.

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Fair. The hinge is dented slightly downward, with a hairline crack, about 1-1/2" long, on the back of the inkwell, at the narrowest part of the neck; this causes about a 1/8" gap in the front when the lid is closed. There is also a short 1/4" dent on the underside front rim of the lid, and a 1/8" crack on the edge of the foot. The gilding is considerably worn throughout, with no traces of it remaining in some areas. The liner is lacking. Hallmarked with: (on the underside of the lid) 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the date letter "A" for 1836-1837; and (on the underside of the foot) 3) the sterling lion passant again; 4) the William IV bust duty mark; and 5) the "BS" maker's mark of Benjamin Smith III. No city mark. Marks excellent, but note that there is repeat of the mark on the underside of the lid which is very worn by its proximity to the retaining nut of the finial.
