William Woodward (American/New Orleans, 1859-1939), "Portrait of Ethel, probably Mary 'Ethel' Dismukes", 1919, pastel on paper, signed and dated mid-right, titled lower center, 26-1/4" x 10-1/2". Glazed, matted and framed. The title "Ethel" suggests that the pastel offered here is a portrait of Mary "Ethel" Dismukes, a Biloxi artist and teacher, active in the New Orleans Arts Association, who later help William Woodward found the Mississippi Gulf Coast Art Association.


  • Condition: There is water damage (tide lines and buckling) to the lower margin and corners. Light toning is present along the borders and scattered patches of foxing is visible throughout. There is a circular (approx. 1/4" x 1/4") tear to the upper left area just above the hair plume and a 3" hairline crack in paper that runs from the lower right edge to the "L" in Ethel. Also present are small scattered losses to paper edges.
