Set of Four Early George III Scottish Sterling Silver Cauldron Salts, hallmarked Edinburgh, 1759-1761, by James Wemyss (1711-ca. 1786; free 1738), each of traditional form with fluted rim and raised on three step-crested pad feet, engraved with the crest of a crescent, h. 1-1/2", dia. 2-3/4", 9.53 total t. oz.

  • Condition: One salt has damage around the body, with dents and ripples, and a professional repair around the crest, which is resultantly quite worn. The rest of the salts are in overall good condition, with the expected scuffs and bumps; one has a 1/4" vertical dent on the body. Each piece marked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling thistle; 2) the Edinburgh castle; 3) the date letter (two "F" for 1759-1760; two "G" for 1760-1761); and 4) the "IW" maker's mark of James Wemyss. The marks on the 1759-60 pair are slightly rubbed but fully legible; those on the 1760-61 pair are more worn, one of which (the damaged and repaired example mentioned) is illegible. Note that the engraved crest is slightly larger on these latter examples.
