Attraction is a diptych portraying a male and a female figure amid a courtship. The lighting and perspective of the figures demonstrate a trompe l'oeil effect as they lean against their respective frames, as if on either side of a wall. The male figure longingly presses his face against his frame, his hand placed close to his heart. The female figure stares softly yet directly at the viewer as she delicately caresses a flower, perhaps deciding whether to return the male figure's affections. A composition that feels universally resonant is enhanced by a masterful use of visual trickery; the contact between the figures and their frames is a carefully constructed shadow meant to disguise the transition from the real and painted frames. This signature trompe l'oeil technique of Abdul Aziz's artistic style garnered him acclaim and celebrity, as well as reflected his inspiration from Greek and Renaissance masters.

At various times, Aziz was an artist, a revolutionary, as well as a musician. He showed precocious creative talent from an early age and went on the study fine art at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy, where he was recognized for his considerable skill and awarded a scholarship to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome. He returned to Indonesia to teach at Udayana University and establish his studio in Ubud, Bali, where he took interest in painting local life but remained influenced by European artistic tradition. This confluence produced his most iconic and celebrated works, such as the present lot, wherein an intimate picture of Balinese culture is captured with the use of Western oil painting techniques, bringing his figures and the viewer together in a blurry space between the real and the imagined.
