Notes: Born in 1931 during Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia, Soedarsono was deeply immersed in the cultural movements of his home country. As a teenager, he began as an art journalist, creating propaganda for the resistance movement, Ikatan Pelajar Indonesia. He started his formal artistic training in 1952 at the Bandung Institute of Technology, where his talent was recognized by Ohio State University, earning him a scholarship to study there in 1960. Exposure to abstract expressionism and color field painting during his two years in the United States greatly influenced his painting style, leading him to explore abstraction upon his return to Bandung. Despite his travels in the West, Soedarsono often painted Indonesian cultural topics, such as dancers in traditional garb, temples, and landscapes depicting his home country.

In the 1970s, galvanized by the protests in rapidly modernizing Indonesian cities like Jakarta, Soedarsono continued to focus on the realities of local life. During this time, the most distinctive theme of his oeuvre also emerged: depicting spiritual transcendence with highly saturated color and abstracted geometry. The present lot of a young woman wearing a traditional sarong is bathed in a warm orangey hue that dominates the canvas. Lines and forms made up of pure pigment, together with heavy impasto, breathe life into the figure, who solemnly looks to her right, away from the viewer's gaze. The limited color palette and abstract forms imbue her with otherworldliness, as if the orange saturation were a spiritual aura. The combination of Western stylistic influence and traditional Indonesian life as subject matter has become a distinctive element of Soedarsono's artistic style.

Soedarsono remained active throughout his life, developing illustrious careers as both a painter and an academic. He received numerous awards, including the National Award for Contemporary Art and the Satalyana Kearya Satya Award for Cultural Achievements of the Republic of Indonesia. He continued to showcase his work later in life; at 88 years old, his final exhibition in 2020 cemented his reputation as a titan of Indonesian art. Collections around the world continue to display his work, including the National Museum of Indonesia, the United Nations in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, and the Neka Museum in Bali, demonstrating his internationally recognized legacy.
