American Federal Leaf- and Vine-Inlaid Walnut Desk/Bookcase

first quarter 19th century, probably the Southern Backcountry, in two parts, the upper section with a broken arched pediment centered by a flute-carved shell-form finial, the scroll ends with like-carved rosettes, the frieze with an inlaid vase and flowers over a pair of line-strung paneled doors, the interior shelves adjustable with grooves, the top joined to the base by sliding dovetails cut into the lower section, the lower section with a slant lid, the segmented interior with vine and leaf inlay on the document drawers and prospect door, over a bank of four graduated cock-beaded drawers, raised on French feet, poplar secondary woods throughout, the drawer bottoms retaining bold jack-plane marks, horizontal backboards, and replaced brasses.

Notes: The vine and leaf inlay is found on pieces from a broad area, from Southwestern Pennsylvania and Maryland to a few rare Louisiana pieces. The inlay on the present piece resembles that most often found on furniture from central and Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Tennessee, though similar inlay can be found on pieces from Western Virginia and North Carolina, as far south as the Georgia Piedmont. The present piece has been regarded as from Tennessee by the owners, though the dealer from whom they acquired it simply dubbed it "Southern".
