Provenance: Descended in the family of John Gilman D'Arcy Paul, Baltimore, Maryland.

Notes: This fine portrait by an unidentified American artist (probably from New York or Baltimore) depicts the young cousin of John Gilman D'Arcy Paul. Henry Wallace Wallingford (Wally) Todd was the son of Dr. Henry Alfred Todd (1854-1925), a Romance Language professor, who taught at Johns Hopkins and Columbia Universities, and his wife Miriam Gilman (1865-1945), the younger sister of Charlotte Gilman Paul.   • Condition: **Framed with glass, but the glass is not touching the surface of the canvas. Surface dirt; toning of the varnish layer; craquelure pattern and stretcher bar marks visible; some of the darker colors fluoresce under UV light but all appear to be hand of the artist. Ornate gilt frame with losses in the lower right and left corners; surface marks, nicks, cracks and abrasions; upper right corner crack and separation.
