Circle of Jean-Baptiste van Loo (French, 1684-1745, active England, 1737-1742), "Portrait of a Gentleman in an Embroidered Waistcoat, Possibly a Member of the Howard Family", oil on canvas, unsigned, old handwritten inscription en verso "David Garrick par J.B. van Loo" erroneously identifying sitter, a "William Ware Gallery/Sloane Street" label en verso frame, 26-3/4" x 21-3/4". Presented in a later giltwood and gesso frame. Provenance: William Ware Gallery, London, England, 1970s.


  • Condition: In generally good condition. Evidence of past restoration with small areas of inpainting along left edge, a section around the proper right arm, and a small section at the ruffle. Old repair with inpainting to mid-right, in the background. Inpainting to right edge. Small losses to upper right portion of canvas, pinprick-sized losses and whitish abrasions in background, mid-right. Scattered whitish pinprick-sized accretions to left side of canvas, predominantly upper left corner. Abrading with old repair to upper left corner. Canvas probably relined.
