Early George III Sterling Silver Covered Cup

hallmarked London, 1767-1768, by William Grundy (ca. 1717-1779; free 1739), of broad baluster form with spiral-gadrooned and -fluted calyx, with a flat-chased band of grapes and acorns centering a rococo cartouche, with acanthus-crested treble-scroll handles, fitted domed lid with flammiform finial and raised on a steeply domed foot, the lid and foot decorated en suite with the calyx, engraved on the cartouche with the arms of Phill impaling Wenman.
h. 12-1/2", w. 10-3/4", dia. 5-1/2"; 44.33 t. oz.

  • Condition: **A very handsome piece with no condition issues noted beyond the expected surface wear associated with age; no dents or repairs noted. The flat-chased band of grapes and acorns is likely a later addition, though the armorial appears of the period. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "M" for 1767-1768; and 4) the "WG" maker's mark of William Grundy. The lid marked identically on the rim, but with the date letter "L" for 1766-1767. Marks on the body excellent, those on the lid good but partially rubbed, especially the maker's mark.
