Pair of George II Sterling Silver Sauceboats

hallmarked London, 1746-1747, by Joseph Sanders (1701-1751; free 1721), of traditional batteau form, with scroll-mounted arched handle with lion's head finial, raised on a molded oval foot-ring, engraved with the crest of Sleigh of Derbyshire & London.
h. 4-1/4", l. 6-1/4", w. 3-1/2"; 17.91 total t. oz.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition. One boat has a 1/4" professional repair on both sides of the handle where it meets the rim. Note that the scrollwork on the handles is not precisely identical, but they do appear to both be original to the piece. Otherwise no condition issues noted beyond the surface scuffs, dings and bumps commensurate with age and use. Each piece hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "l" for 1746-1747; and 4) the "IS" maker's mark of Joseph Sanders. The hallmarks are partially rubbed on both (with the lion passant obliterated on one piece), but identifiable in conjunction with one another.
