Early Victorian Sterling Silver Inkstand, hallmarked London, 1841-1842, by Edward Barnard & Sons, of oval form with acanthus scroll rim, fitted with silver-capped cut glass inkwell and pounce pot centering a nibs container with taper-stand cap, h. 4-1/2", l. 10-1/2", w. 6-1/2", 15.40 total t. oz. (weighable silver).
- Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Scattered scuffs, bumps and dings consistent with age, but no large dents noted. Three or four short nicks on one cartouche. Both cartouches have silver solder around their perimeter on the underside, suggesting that and earlier one with an armorial may have been cut out and replaced, but this is undetectable on the upper surface and may just as likely be part of the original construction. Moderate wear to the relief. Candle extinguisher lacking. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "F" for 1841-1842; 4) the Victoria's bust duty mark; and 5) the "EE/JW/B" in a quatrefoil mark of E. Barnard & Sons. Marks excellent. Detachable elements and collar fully marked, some rubbed. Glass elements are well-worn, with numerous chips, frits and scratches, the most significant chips being two on the rim and one on the foot of one, and two on the shoulder and one on the foot of the other; the smallest 3/8" x 1/4", the largest 1/2" x 5/8". The silver collar is lacking on one, but both caps are present.
