French Gilt-Bronze Figural Mantel Clock

second quarter 19th century, decorated with a classical military figure, his helmet and a victory wreath, with an enamel dial signed "Piolaine a Paris", for Michel-Francois Piolaine, and an oval tablet depicting a battle scene on the lower section of the clock, mounted with a silk-string suspension movement, on engine-turned bell-form feet.

Notes: Michel-Francois Piolaine was one of the foremost Parisian clockmakers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A clock by this maker is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Palace.
