George III Sterling Silver Fruit Bowl

hallmarked London, 1777-1778, by Wakelin & Taylor, of oval form, with shaped and applied rococo rim above reticulated sides with stars, imbrication and lattices, embossed with oval cartouches and swags and raised on four scroll-crested shell feet, monogrammed "LA" opposing "JPW", the underside with later presentation inscription.

  • Provenance: The Collection of the Late Dr. E. Ralph Lupin, New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Condition: **In overall very good condition. No dents or repairs. Some scattered scuffs and pinpoint dings. No losses or cracks in the openwork, but two of the narrow, vertical uprights on the reticulation around the lower edge are bent. Very sturdy. Hallmarked (on the body near the upper edge of one narrow end) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "b" for 1777-1778; and 4) the "IW/WT" with fleur-de-lys maker's mark of Wakelin & Taylor.
