Good Regency Sterling Silver Epergne

hallmarked London, 1804, by Thomas Holland II, with a central fruit basket decorated with openwork acanthus fronds and grape clusters between gadrooned banding, raised of four Egyptian bust feet above a base decorated en suite and with four scrolling arms coiled with serpents, the heads supporting an openwork basket, the whole raised on four eagle's head feet, the baskets fitted with glass bowls, the central fruit basket removable for use by itself.
h. 13", w. 17-1/2", l. 19-1/4"; 96.88 t. oz. (excluding glass bowls)

  • Provenance: The Collection of the Late Dr. E. Ralph Lupin, New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Condition: **In generally good condition, with some minor issues as follows. There is one grape leaf missing on one of the openwork motifs on the base (closest to the narrow end), and two of the acanthus leaves have some annealing flaws (faint cracks), one on the underside, the other on the upper. Minor repairs on two of the baskets where they meet the arm. Otherwise no issues noted beyond the expected surface scuffs, dings and wear commensurate with age and use. Hallmarked (on the lower edge of the base and upper edge of the large basket) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "I" for 1804-1805; 4) the George III cusped duty mark; and 5) the "TH" maker's mark of Thomas Holland II. The arms part-marked (no city mark) on the band of the baskets. Marks good. Glass elements in generally good condition. The large glass basket has some bubbles and waves consistent with hand manufacture and is of some age (if not original); no chips or cracks. The four smaller baskets are of later manufacture; one of these is thicker and has a slightly shorter rim than the others. One small basket has been broken into five large pieces and competently restored with epoxy, though the cracks are visible. Some very minor frits along the indented rims of the others.
