George III Sterling Silver Hot Water Urn, hallmarked London, 1780-1781, by Charles Wright (1732-1815; free 1754), the ovoid body decorated with elaborate wrigglework ovolo banding and swags, with arched handles, waisted collar and lid, urn-form finial and square-section spout with spatulate key, the whole above a waisted stem and plinth base raised on four spherical feet, the whole with narrow beaded banding, h. 21-1/4", w. 10-3/4", d. 11-1/4", 91.03 t. oz.

  • Condition: In generally good condition with the expected signs of age and use. The four spherical feet show old professional repairs where they are attached to the body, but otherwise no repairs noted. No significant dents. Some wear to the surface details. Shrinkage cracks (but not losses) to the key. Not tested for water fastness. Hallmarked (on the underside, inside the stem) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "C" for 1780-1781; and 4) the "CW" maker's mark of Charles Wright. The marks (except for the city mark) are legible but somewhat muddied by their position at the base of the billet chamber and its associated intense heat.
