George III Sterling Silver Salver

hallmarked London, 1765-1766, by "LH", circular form with openwork bead-and-scroll border, raised on four shell-and-scroll feet, the plateau engraved with a scrolling rococo cartouche.
dia. 14-1/4"; 44.13 t. oz.

  • Condition: **There are several (about fifteen) spots where the openwork rim has been repaired and braced with short (1/4" to 1") narrow silver straps. Some of these are clustered under one foot, and another foot has a larger braced repair across its width (1-1/2") with tiny rivets. There is a similar braced repair on the underside perimeter of the plateau about 1-1/4" long, and another with two 3/16" pieces next to each other. All these repairs are professionally executed and generally not visible from the upper surface, with the exception of the larger foot repair, where some cracks are visible in the scrollwork on the upper surface. Light scuffs on the plateau. Nice engraving. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "k" for 1765-1766; and 4) the unidentified "LH" (script) maker's mark. Marks worn but legible.
