George III Sterling Silver Salver

hallmarked London, 1773-1774, by Richard Rugg I (ca. 1723-1775; free 1746), of circular form with beaded serpentine-lobed rim, raised on four ball-and-claw feet, engraved on the plateau with a laurel, ribbon and rose-mantled cartouche centering the arms of Yate of Great Farringdon, Berkshire.
dia. 17"; 66.01 t. oz.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition with the expected patina of age: surface scuffs and dings, but no dents or breaks noted. Minor annealing flaw on the plateau at one peak of the rim. Two braces (probably original) on the underside edge to reinforce the thinning caused by chasing the plateau perimeter. Tiny engraver's point at the center of the armorial. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "S" for 1773-1774; and 4) the "RR" maker's mark of Richard Rugg I. Scratch weight "67=0" on the underside. An attractive piece.
