Notes: When this painting sold at Christie's in 2005, it was accompanied with copies of the original May 1924 correspondence from the artist in his studio in Cragsmoor, New York, that explains the scene and the significance of the painting's title:

"I hope it will please... I consider it one of my finest things... I have no real title for the picture but I have written a few lines in an attempt to describe what I wished to express: When Sol bursts forth and thrusts the clouds away, he smiles; and smiling, spreads a light that gladdens all the earth... To give you of my best was my object."


  • Condition: **Canvas relined; darkening of the varnish layer; layer of surface dirt. Inpainting touch-ups to foreground, upper left, upper right and lower right corners; a larger area of inpainting to upper left sky area. Frame with rubbing, nicks, abrasions and minor losses.
