George VI Sterling Silver Center Bowl

hallmarked Birmingham, 1938-1939, by William Henry Sparrow, with shell-and-scroll "Monteith" rim above a band of repousse acanthus scrolls on a matte ground with two oval cartouches, the lower half with spiral flutes and gadroons, raised on a domed foot banded en suite.
h. 7-3/4", dia. 10"; 44.00 t. oz.

  • Condition: **There is a compression dent going about halfway around the dome of the foot, causing the bowl to sit at a 2 degree slant. Test notch cut on the underside interior edge of the foot. One short 1/4" crack on the rim where the shell-and-scroll motifs have been joined. Otherwise in generally good condition with no issues noted beyond light surface scratches and dings consistent with age, with some mellowing to the details in relief. Nice repousse work. Hallmarked (on the body, below the rim) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the Birmingham anchor; 3) the date letter "O" for 1938-1939; and 4) the "WHS" maker's mark of William Henry Sparrow. Marks excellent.
