Impressive Pair of Large Majolica Urns

fourth quarter 19th century, in the manner of Thomas Victor Sergent, French, the sides decorated with molded scenes from a Bacchanalian feast, with a mottled brown ground and gadroon-molded rims, the urns set with satyr-molded handles.
h. 22", w. 12", d. 10-1/2"

  • Condition: **On one urn, there is a chip to the foot rim and one to the maenad's wreathe on the reserve. A few small losses to the top coat of the glaze are scattered throughout the maenad's thigh and background. The second urn has a small 1-5/8" x 1/2" professional repair (filler) to the stem foot base, probably from an innate firing crack that opened up over time. A few minute losses are present to the stem (at the base of the urn bowl) along a firing crack that encompasses most of the circumference of the stem. Both urn bases exhibit a few "flea bite" losses to their corner edges. Damages are minimal and not easily visible, and are commensurate with age and use.
