Japanese Silver Bowl

Bisansha of Yokohama, late Meiji period, ca. 1907, the bowl of slightly compressed globular form, narrowing to a waisted neck with flared lip, the body with repousse koi, and having an applied iris design, the flowers naturalistically modeled to raise the bowl on three legs, the feet marked "Bisansha" and "Jungin" (pure silver), with engraved brass presentation plaque reading "Nippon Bahitsu Kairyo Kabushiki Kaisha. / A.M.T Woodward Esqr. / 1907 / Souvenir of Autumn Meeting / Keihin Keiba Club".

Notes: The Japan Daily Mail of the period records that the Keihin Keiba Club was a horse racing club founded in Yokohama in 1907 and of which Woodward was a supervisor.


  • Condition: **Three of the applied iris stems need to be resoldered to bowl and exhibit residue of having been previously repaired. Two of the feet have light soldering. Stems that are loose are slightly bent. Minor dents to interior and a few to exterior.
