Large Chinese Bronze Censer with Associated Carved Hardwood Base

probably first half 20th century, in the archaic style, of squat, globular form, with flared rim, having stylized dragon head handles, the exterior with tao-tie design, raised on a short pedestal foot, with associated hardwood stand with circular rouge marble top set within a thick sectional frame, with carved and pierced apron, on four carved cabriole legs and floral X-form stretcher.

Provenance: Estate of Audry and Sherwood Bailey, Sr., Pass Christian, Mississippi.


  • Condition: **The inside of the censer has circular filler along the well and wall edge. The handles have been re-soldered on the interior, and have minor filler/adhesive on the exterior where they attach to the body. Underside of censer has sealant. The hardwood stand has some some shrinkage cracks around the marble insert, one of which split near a leg screw. All four legs/feet have been repaired at the X-form stretcher. Both censer and stand exhibit minor scratches, accretions and patina. Structurally sound and in otherwise good condition.
