Large, Exceptional KPM Porcelain Plaque of the "Vestal Virgin"

fourth quarter 19th century, after Angelica Kauffman (Swiss, 1741-1807), made by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, Berlin, and marked with an incised "KPM" and a baton, the figure depicted seated, veiled and holding an ancient lit oil lamp, in a contemporary giltwood frame.
plaque h. 16-1/4", w. 12", overall h. 21-3/4", w. 17-3/4"

Provenance: Private collection, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

  • Condition: **Achingly beautiful image. Meticulously executed. There is some very minor abrading with minute losses to the slightly visible top edge of the porcelain plaque, probably due to friction of frame. Otherwise in apparently perfect condition with the painted surface intact. The marks clear. Plaque was not examined out of the frame.
