Maltese Silver Sottocoppa

1861, by Giuseppe Tortell, of hexagonally lobed circular form with molded rim, raised on a tall domed foot.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition. Scattered surface scuffs, dings, nicks and scrapes, but no dents, breaks or repairs noted. There is very slight 1-3/4" circular compression dent in the center where the foot meets the body, created by the threaded boss mounted to the underside onto which the foot screws. Evidence of hand construction throughout the underside, including hammer marks, annealing flaws and recessed rivets where the rim is attached. Marked (on the rim) with: 1) the Maltese cross for 11 deniers (.916) silver; 2) the date code "5" for 1861; 3) the "GT" maker's mark of Giuseppe Tortell; and 4) an unidentified mark (a bird?). The basal edge of the foot part-marked. Assayer's scrapes on the underside of the rim. Inked accession mark on the inside of the foot "67.00516".
