Man's Silk Jifu ca. 1785, the dark blue silk with gold embroidery of dragons with flaming pearls, bats and ruyi clouds over a pattern of waves, the neck and cuffs trimmed with threads of gold-leaf over lacquered-paper-strip-wrapped silk couched with silk, lined with a lighter blue silk, l. 54-1/2", w, 82", sleeve to sleeve. Similar examples can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois and the Denver Art Museum, Denver, Colorado.

  • Condition: Pattern of dragons is clear and blue silk is still rich in color. Darkening and some thinning to the neck and cuffs. Very minor fading in areas to the surface. A couple of scattered repairs including one near hem on the robe's interior and a replaced button at the neck. A few tears in the lining, mostly along the seams that are not visible when the garment is closed. Marked with two faded characters on the inner collar. Jifu is in overall stable condition and the aforementioned deterioration is the result of the piece's age and it having been worn and used.
