Monumental Labeled Fiske Cast Iron Garden Urn

fourth quarter 19th century, New York, the bowl with an egg-and-dart-molded rim and base, and set with lion's-head handles, the standard molded with anthemia and decorated with leaves and berries, on a stepped plinth marked "Manufactured by J. W. Fiske NY".
h. 65", w. 41", d. 43"

Provenance: The Estate of Donald J. Hurst, Waterloo, Iowa.

  • Condition: **In very good "as found" condition. The piece exhibits normal oxidation and paint degradation and losses. There are multiple layers of paint.

The assembled piece is very sturdy and solid. The consignor indicated he replaced the old corroded internal rod with a new threaded one. The nut on the present one turns freely to break the piece down. The new threaded rod is too long and needs to be shortened. The piece breaks down into three larger elements and two small ones.

There are no apparent losses or repairs. Note that the heavy paint could hide past repairs, but there are no visible indications of such.
