Old Sheffield Plate Wine Cooler

first quarter 19th century, of gadrooned campana form with "vintage" rim, acanthus calyx and Bacchic masque-mounted handles, raised on a gadrooned pedestal of tapering square section, above a plinth base with four scroll, flower and acanthus-crested lion's paw feet.
h. 16-1/2", dia. 9-1/2"

Provenance: Bruce McCashin Collection.

  • Condition: **In generally good condition. Some scattered tiny bumps and nicks to the handles, rims and other lead-filled elements, but no dents, cracks, splits or repairs noted. Slight bleeding to the copper on the very sharp edges of the square plinth, the lowermost edge of the gadrooning, and the highest relief of the acanthus calyx. One small loss to the silver, 1/16" x 3/8", on the inside rim. One toe of one paw foot has a 3/8" x 1/2" indentation mostly concealed on the underside, though with the lead exposed and with one of the protective silver pads on the underside (of which there are three on each foot to prevent wear to the silver plating) torn but present. No maker's mark. No collar or liner. An attractive and unusual piece with no significant condition issues.
