Pair of Exuberantly Modeled American Rococo Revival Rosewood Armchairs

third quarter 19th century, probably by Alexander Roux, New York, each having a pierced crest with a pair of carved birds amidst foliate and scroll carving, a medallion-form back joined to open arms, a bowed seat rail with central carving and cabriole legs ending in French toes.

Other Notes: Parlor furniture in this pattern is among the most robustly modeled and carved American rococo revival seating furniture. At least one sofa and an additional pair of armchairs in this pattern have surfaced with a reputed history of ownership in the Randolph family and were formerly in Nottoway Plantation House, designed by Henry Howard in White Castle, Louisiana.


  • Condition: **Both chairs in good "as found" condition, exhibiting some past repairs, normal mars, wear, shrinkage and the usual small flakes to the edges of carved surfaces.

    Upholstery on both is in good condition.

    Chair A:
    Arms and legs are tight. There is some filler at the joint of one arm and the stile.
    There is a loose piece of floral carving on the crest.
    One front caster is detached but present.

    Chair B:
    There is a glued break on the crest, and an upper reglued straight lamination seam.
    The latter is slightly misaligned.
    Arms and legs are tight. There is some filler and separation in the joint of one arm and stile.
    There is a carving loss to flora at the base of one arm support.
