Pair of George III Sterling Silver Butter Shells

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Both pieces have several narrow lines of silver solder along the grooves on the underside where the upper sharp edges have worn through and been repaired. These professional repairs are mostly invisible on the upper side; they are noticeable in a few spots on one shell. The other shell is dented very slightly downward on one edge. No monograms/crests or evidence of their removal. Each piece hallmarked (one under the handle, the other on the edge) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "A" (for 1796-1797) or "I" for 1804"; 4) the George III bust duty mark (the 1804 example cusped); and 5) the "TW" script mark of Thomas Wallis II or the "IC/TH" in a trefoil maker's mark of Crouch & Hannam.
