Pair of William IV Old Sheffield Plate Tureens

second quarter 19th century, maker's mark "J.A.", each of bulbous lobed oval form, with rocaille rim and large, robust acanthus-mounted handles and feet, the fitted domed lid with ring handle en suite; engraved with the arms of Hunter of Hafton, Argyll.
h. 11-1/4", l. 16-1/2", w. 10-1/2"

  • Condition: **One tureen has numerous scattered outward bumps on the underside suggesting a dent that has been hammered out. Both tureens have a series of short, 1/4" scratches on the upper right of the cartouche area on both sides, covering about a square inch. The well-detailed armorial has been "cancelled" by a thin diagonal line through it: a crude scratch on one tureen, and a finely-hatched wrigglework line on the other. Minor dents on both lid sleeves. All of these issues are minor, and the tureens are otherwise in quite good condition, with no bleeding to the copper, repairs or losses. Some wear to the rim, handles and feet, with some small spots of wear to the lead core on the highest relief, but no splits.
