Queen Anne Britannia Silver Tankard

hallmarked London, 1708-1709, by Timothy Ley, of traditional tapering cylindrical form with molded base and rim, "S"-scroll handle, hinged, step-domed lid and scrolling billet, engraved on the body with the arms of Carey impaling Piast(?).
h. 6", dia. 4-1/4", l. 6"; 13.84 t. oz.

  • Condition: **Minor compression dents where the handle meets the body, visible on the interior, with a well-executed repaired 1" crack on one side of the upper handle attachment. Evidence of repair at the lower end of the handle and boss, including a 1/4" notch on the underside of the handle curve. The hinge pin has considerable wiggle, but is secure. Otherwise in reasonably good condition, with the expected bumps, scuffs and dings consistent with age. The armorial is nice and crisp; its design is consistent with the period and is likely original. Hallmarked (on the body, near the rim, and on the underside of the lid) with: 1) the seated Britannia; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter n for 1708-1709; and 4) the "Le" with pellets and flowers maker's mark of Timothy Ley; the maker's mark repeated on the handle. Marks worn but legible in toto.
