Unusual George III Sterling Silver Tea Set

hallmarked London, 1786-1788, by Robert Hennell I, including an oval barrel-form teapot, h. 5-1/2", l. 10-1/4", a vasiform sugar urn, h. 6-1/2", w. 5-3/4", and a cream jug, h. 5-3/8", w. 5-1/4", each decorated with incised "staves" and reeded bands, the teapot with flush-fitted domed lid, conical spout and wood finial and crested handle, the cream and sugar with arched reeded handle(s), gilt interior and pedestal foot above a square plinth base.
33.30 total t. oz.

Provenance: J. H. Bourdon-Smith, Ltd., London, UK; Bruce McCashin Collection.

  • Condition: **In generally good condition, with no dents or significant scratches noted. Surface wear commensurate with age, particularly on the corners of the square plinth bases, but no splits, repairs or problematic thinning. Gilding bright. The wooden handle on the teapot is a different color than the finial, indicating that one is probably a later (but not recent) replacement. There is a crack in the wooden handle where it meets the upper attachment, neatly repaired with epoxy and evidently sound with no "give". Minor shrinkage crack on the base of the finial. Each piece hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "l" [teapot] or "m" [cream & sugar] for 1786/87 and 1787/88, respectively; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "RH" maker's mark of Robert Hennell I. Marks very good to excellent; nice and crisp. An attractive and unusual set.
