Rare Napoleon III Porcelain Coffee Set in its Original Traveling Case, third quarter 19th century, probably Paris, hand-painted with scenes from the Renaissance on a vert pale ground with bamboo-decorated borders, the set comprised of an oval tray featuring a scene of a concert, w. 20-1/2", d. 16-1/2", a coffeepot, h. 8-1/4", w. 7-3/4", a covered hot milk jug, h. 6-1/4", w. 5-3/4", a sugar bowl, h. 5-3/4", w. 6", seven of the original nine coffee cups decorated with hand-painted panels of Renaissance genre scenes, h. 2-1/2", and nine saucers, dia. 2-1/2", in its original silk-lined fitted traveling case, covered in stamped leatherette.
- Condition: TRAY: Reserve with very scattered TINY surface flakes and minor rubbing to the gilt rim at the lower edge. Unglazed underside with impressed "No.1 Bis" within an oval. COFFEEPOT: An angled, meandering hairline along the lower body at one side from "the card players" reserve under and around the spout and faintly up the side of the spout. HOT MILK PITCHER: Hairline across the lower handle and a vertical hairline down from the rim through one reserve then meandering over to, around and up into one lower side of the spout. SAUCERS: Four examples each with a small flake chip at the rim edge. Feet with scattered nicks and very minor glaze anomalies. CUPS: One with a nick at the rim, another fully restored. Two cups lacking. CASE: Exterior with general wear and fraying at the edges. The padded silk interior generally frayed with scattered stains. All of the above consistent with age.
