Two Chinese Sancai Pottery Figures of Civic Officials, Tang Dynasty (618-906), probably 8th century, the two figures dressed in typical Tang court robes consisting of a garment with flowing sleeves over a long gown, each wearing a hat consistent with styles typified by Tang courtiers, on carved wooden stands, figure, h. 23-1/4", w. 5-1/2" and h. 22-1/2", w. 5-3/4". Provenance: The Flatt Collection. Figures like this appear in the permanent collections of many prestigious institutions including the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Honolulu, Hawaii, the New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, Louisiana, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the British Museum, London, United Kingdom, and the Musee Guimet, Paris, France.


  • Condition: In overall fine and stable condition. Scattered firing anomalies and imperfections throughout both figures. Minor losses to glaze and pigments. Faces are white with traces of red and black color. Areas of craquelure throughout, particularly near the base of each figure. No major losses and some areas with possible old professional preservation consistent and expected with age and material.
