Two Early Hanoverian Silver Trencher Salts

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. No condition issues noted beyond some scattered dings and pips consistent with age. Good patina with wear to the sharp edges and monograms. There is visible silver solder to several interior seams of both salts; there is only one spot where this appears to be a repaired split as seen from the exterior, but some of the others may also be well-executed repairs rather than part of the original construction. The Rood cellar has some minor black salt spotting in the bowl. The Rood example hallmarked (on the underside): 1) the seated Britannia; 2) the London lion's head erased; 3) the date letter "F" for 1721-1722; and the "Ro" maker's mark of James Rood; the marks are well-rubbed but identifiable. The Wood example hallmarked (on the underside) with 1) sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "b" for 1737-1738; and 4) the "EW" maker's mark of Edward Wood; the marks well-rubbed (only the "W" of the maker's mark visible) but identifiable.
