Two English Regency Tortoiseshell Two-Compartment Caddies, second quarter 19th century, the larger example on ball feet, the front with a metal oval cartouche initialed "B", the cover with unusual decoration of contrasting darker tortoiseshell "crossbanding", h. 7", w. 7", d. 4-1/4", and the smaller example with a domed cover, the panels of tortoiseshell divided with metal, h. 5-3/4", w. 6-1/2", d. 3-3/4". Provenance: Merryl Israel Aron, New Orleans, Louisiana.


  • Condition: Footed Caddy - Tortoiseshell loss at front left corner now colored to match. Cracks throughout, minor losses at corners. Interior retaining original lids as well as velvet liner to top of caddy. Tea compartment liner appears to be newer. Smaller Caddy - A few small scattered cracks, one long crack from the hinge to the bottom of the back. Minor lifting to tortoiseshell with no major losses. The case separates into two pieces, in need of minor structural repair. The interior retaining original lids and velvet liner under top. The tin lining is absent on this piece.
