Unusual Pair of George II Sterling Silver Sauceboats, hallmarked London, 1756-1757, by William Shaw and William Priest, each of batteau form and decorated with a repousse band of ribboned floral swags below a gadrooned rim, with an elaborately detailed figural dolphin handle and raised on a similarly impressive figural sea turtle base, engraved under the spout with an armorial, the baron unidentified (argent a fess chequy or and azure between three birds azure) but impaling Majendie, h. 6-7/8", l. 8-5/8", w. 4", 46.64 total t. oz

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Both sauceboats have a noticeable compression dent around the base of the bowl where the boat meets the turtle's back, at the end near the handle and extending about two-thirds of the way towards the spout. This causes a rearward slant to both boats, visible in the photograph. One one boat, there is a 3/4" dent and 1" area of silver soldered repair on the side, at the bottom of the repousse decoration. Otherwise, in surprisingly good condition, with no repairs and light surface wear (scuffs, dings, etc.) associated with age. Excellent detail on the dolphin and turtles; well-engraved arms. Each hallmarked (on the side, near the handle) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3: the date letter "A" for 1756-1757; and the "WS/WP" in a Maltese cross maker's mark of Shaw and Priest. Marks moderately rubbed, especially the maker's mark, but identifiable. An amusing and attractive pair.
