Early George III Sterling Silver Chocolate Pot

hallmarked London, 1767-1768, by the unidentified WF/IK, the pear-shaped body with elaborate palmette- and acanthus-mounted gooseneck spout and domed, gadrooned foot-ring, the hinged domed lid with a reclining Mandarin finial detaching to receive the muddler, with crested "S"-scroll wooden handle, engraved with the arms of Elton of Berkshire and London.
h. 12", l. 8-1/4", dia. 4-3/4"; 29.07 t. oz. (including wooden handle)

  • Condition: **In overall good condition with no issues noted on the silver beyond the expected bumps, scuffs and dings commensurate with age. Minor casting pitting on the spout. Wear to the details of the finial and spout mounts. Nice, crisp armorial, possibly of later date. Repair to the crest and lower end of the wooden handle (itself perhaps a later, but not recent, replacement); handle sound. Detachable hinge pin typical of chocolate pots. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "M" for 1767-1768; and 4) the incuse "WF/IK" intersecting maker's mark.
