Large Victorian Elkington & Co. Silverplate Candelabrum, 1865, Birmingham, with lobed, waisted standard between foliate calyces and surmounted by a vasiform foliate nozzle fitted with a central foliate standard surrounded by five scrolling arms en suite, the central nozzle fitted with a flammiform finial, the outer arms each terminating in a foliate drip-pan and nozzle en suite, each fitted with a detachable bobeche, the whole raised above a serpentine-lobed base with broad leaf decoration, engraved on the base with a conjoined monogram "WAS" surmounted by an earl's crown, h. 25-1/2", dia. 15".

  • Condition: One arm is broken where it meets the standard; this had been previously repaired with lead solder but has broken again. Although the arm is still attached, it should be repaired more permanently. Otherwise, the candelabrum is in good used condition, with no other breaks or repairs noted, nor any loss to the silvering. The bright underside suggests that the piece may have been re-plated at some point, but heavy oxidation in the recesses indicates that this is not recent. One bobeche is frozen in the socket, probably from wax residue. Marked on the basal edge with the Elkington trademark and date letter "A" for 1865.
